Squirrel wars

We love birds (well, the cute ones really). We enjoy feeding them and watching them. We encourage them to visit our backyard, but those squirrels! What hogs! We don't wanna hurt the critters, just keep them off of our bird feeders. This blog describes some of our experiences in squirrel proofing our backyard. Not necessarily in chronological order.

Hubby (and wife) delights at viewing all the birds. We back onto a wild area, a small woods, so our back yard is an "edge". Birds like edges we have found out.

So, thinking if one feeder brings that many, we'll get two feeders and enjoy them all the more.

So off to the store we go and buy a "special" feeder. For thistle. A specialty seed for goldfinches. Thistle is one of the most expensive seeds you can buy. No matter, squirrels don't like thistle we have heard. Won't touch it. We'll be saving money by just not feeding the rodent population in our back yard (and surrounding area). I think by now they are coming from a 5 mile radius.

So all is well for a bit (at least for that feeder). We notice the squirrels on it, but they don't seem to be bothering it much. However, after a bit we notice squirrel teeth marks on it. Hmmmm.

Then sure enough, a few days later the little buggers have chewed right through it and the expensive feed has spilled all over. They didn't eat it, just destroyed the feeder to prove that they could!

*sigh* at least the doves and the juncos are enjoying the thistle. We enjoy them too.
